Still looking for plans in KL? Studio Monkey Shoulder LIVE is still ON

Kuala Lumpur’s independent music culture has never been defined solely by major concert halls or large-scale festivals. Much of its energy is found in smaller rooms — behind the doors of bars, clubs and community-led spaces where selectors introduce unfamiliar sounds, artists find new audiences and creative relationships form organically.

That grassroots spirit is at the centre of Studio Monkey Shoulder LIVE, a city-wide music series bringing together Monkey Shoulder, British DJ and broadcaster Gilles Peterson, global radio platform Worldwide FM, and Kuala Lumpur-based music collective Saturday Selects.

Running in Kuala Lumpur from 21 August to 12 September 2026, the programme moves across several of the capital’s nightlife venues rather than remaining in a single festival location. The announced line-up includes local selectors such as Roshan, MIA and LZZY, with music spanning jazz, soul, house, hip-hop and forward-looking club sounds.

A Regional Music Series Built Around Local Communities

Studio Monkey Shoulder LIVE forms part of a broader two-month programme moving through four Southeast Asian markets, with each city’s edition shaped in partnership with a locally established music collective.

Rather than importing the same format and line-up into every destination, the initiative gives local collaborators room to select the artists, venues and sounds that best represent their respective communities. The wider programme includes editions in Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and Thailand.

For Kuala Lumpur, that role belongs to Saturday Selects.

Established in 2016, the collective began as a platform for sharing music before developing into a recognisable presence within the city’s independent nightlife scene. Its activities have since expanded across parties, radio programming, artist curation and event production, with an approach that moves comfortably between hip-hop, R&B, house, disco and other contemporary electronic sounds.

This local knowledge is important to the project. Instead of treating Kuala Lumpur as little more than another stop on a regional promotional tour, the series places people already involved in the city’s music culture at the centre of its creative direction.

Gilles Peterson and Worldwide FM Support the Programme

Supporting the wider vision are Gilles Peterson and Worldwide FM.

Peterson is known for a genre-fluid approach that connects jazz with soul, electronic music, hip-hop and sounds from different parts of the world. Worldwide FM describes itself as a global music-radio platform founded by Peterson to connect people through music that moves across cultures and borders. Its programming also includes an established Studio Monkey Shoulder strand focused on creative communities and independent music scenes.

“DIY music culture is built on exchange,” Peterson said in the launch announcement, describing the project as an opportunity to recognise the people and grassroots communities moving local music culture forward.

His involvement does not mean imposing an external idea of what Kuala Lumpur should sound like. Instead, Worldwide FM works alongside Saturday Selects to help give the city’s own selectors and emerging artists greater visibility.

A Line-Up That Moves Across Genres

Across the Kuala Lumpur programme, audiences can expect sets that move between genres rather than remaining within a rigid musical category.

The announced artists include Roshan, the founder of Saturday Selects, together with MIA and LZZY. The broader sonic direction covers jazz, soul, house, hip-hop and contemporary club music, reflecting the open-format character that has long shaped Saturday Selects’ events and radio programming.

Roshan’s own musical background reflects that flexibility. His sets have been associated with hip-hop, R&B, house and disco, while his work through Saturday Selects has centred on introducing audiences to both established names and emerging regional talent.

For listeners, the attraction lies in discovery. These are not evenings built only around easily recognisable commercial tracks or a single headline act. Each stop is intended to allow selectors to construct a musical journey while responding to the atmosphere and identity of the venue.

Kuala Lumpur Becomes the Stage

The series travels through a cross-section of Kuala Lumpur’s nightlife spaces, giving each programme a different setting and audience.

By moving from a club environment to a hotel rooftop and neighbourhood bars, Studio Monkey Shoulder LIVE avoids the feeling of a conventional touring festival. Each venue becomes part of the creative programme rather than simply functioning as a room in which music is played.

The approach also allows audiences to experience the project in more intimate surroundings. Instead of watching from a distant festival stage, guests are placed within the same space as the selectors, encouraging a more direct exchange between performers, bartenders and listeners.

Cocktails Designed to Accompany the Music

While music remains the programme’s central focus, the evenings are accompanied by a cocktail selection built around the Ginger Monkey and Monkey Highball.

Monkey Shoulder is a blended malt Scotch whisky made from small batches of Speyside single malts. William Grant & Sons positions it as a rich, fruity and approachable whisky created with versatility and mixing in mind.

The Ginger Monkey keeps that approach straightforward, combining Monkey Shoulder Original with dry ginger ale and an orange wedge. The result is a tall, refreshing serve in which ginger spice and citrus complement the whisky’s malt and vanilla character.

Within Studio Monkey Shoulder LIVE, the drinks are intended to function as a natural extension of each venue rather than distracting from the performances.

As Brendon Khoo, Monkey Shoulder’s Southeast Asia regional brand ambassador, observed in the announcement, cocktails and music share an ability to bring people together. That connection gives the series its social foundation: the tracks create the atmosphere, while the drinks and intimate spaces encourage audiences to stay, converse and engage with one another.

More Than a Conventional Brand Event

Brand-sponsored music programmes are not new, but Studio Monkey Shoulder LIVE distinguishes itself through its emphasis on local curatorship.

Saturday Selects is not presented merely as a supporting act beneath an international name. The collective has been given responsibility for shaping the Kuala Lumpur identity of the project, selecting talent and bringing the programme into spaces already connected to the city’s music and nightlife communities.

That approach is significant because grassroots scenes do not develop through one-off appearances alone. They grow through repeated events, accessible platforms, regular radio programming and communities willing to support artists before they become widely recognised.

By working with collectives that already have those relationships, the series has an opportunity to contribute to the existing culture rather than constructing a temporary promotional version of it.

A City-Wide Celebration of Sound and Connection

At its best, Studio Monkey Shoulder LIVE is less about presenting a fixed definition of Kuala Lumpur nightlife and more about allowing the city’s different musical personalities to emerge.

The combination of Saturday Selects’ local network, Worldwide FM’s international perspective and a programme spread across several venues creates room for exchange without losing sight of the people already shaping the scene.

For audiences, it offers several ways to participate. Long-time followers of Saturday Selects can experience the collective within a larger regional collaboration, while newcomers have an accessible introduction to local DJs and genres that may sit outside their usual listening habits.

Ultimately, the series makes a persuasive case for placing grassroots talent and intimate venues at the centre of the conversation. Kuala Lumpur’s music culture does not require a single enormous stage to prove its vitality. Sometimes, the most meaningful discoveries happen in a crowded room, with the right selector behind the decks and an audience willing to listen.
